Our clients often ask us what they can do to save a badly flooded rug. This often depends on the source of the flooding – to help you decide when to discard, clean or call a professional rug cleaner we have put together the following guidelines.
- Large area rugs and any rug with foam backing should be discarded if flooded with contaminated water. With the exception of high value rugs, the time and expense of professional cleaning is generally not worth the effort or the health risk.
- If you are determined to save a rug soaked with contaminated water, consult a professional rug cleaning company that can pick up your rug and clean it at their own facilities.
- Large rugs that have been soaked by clean rainwater can be salvaged. Preferably have it cleaned by professionals with proper rug drying equipment.
- Small throw rugs can often be adequately cleaned in a washing machine.
- If your rug has been flooded for more than 24 hours, it will need to be replaced. If it has been flooded for less than 24 hours, call a professional to come in and address the need for cleaning and drying. Ask the rug cleaning company if they are able to handle insurance claims.
